Before becoming the CEO, he was a Chief Technology Officer at Flutterwave. Olugbenga Agboola became the CEO when Iyinoluwa Samuel Aboyeji, the former CEO stepped down.

Aside from being a fintech engineer and an entrepreneur, he is also a certified ethical hacker, security analyst, and Microsoft system engineer. Olugbenga Agboola also assisted in the growth of a few Fintech companies and financial services like PayPal and Standard Bank.

Early life and education

Olugbenga Agboola was born in 1985, in Lagos State, Nigeria. He had his early education in Nigeria before moving overseas for academic purposes. Gbenga has more academic certifications than you can imagine.

He obtained his Masters of Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Management, Cambridge. Olugbenga Agboola also possesses a master’s degree in information technology security and behavioural engineering. 

He obtained his standard IT security certifications from EC-Council University, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After that, he obtained his Project Management and Advanced Computing degree from the University of Westminster in London, England.

Many Nigerians would have stopped their education once they have certifications like this, but Olugbenga Agboola did not.

He furthered his academics by starting and completing the Fundamentals of Finance for The Technical Executive in November 2012. In April 2013, Gbenga developed a Leading Edge Operations Strategy. 

In November 2014, he was a participant in the Supply Chain Strategy and Management programme, and the Essential IT for Non-IT Executives. In this training, he acquired skills in the usage of Development Tools. 

Olugbenga Agboola also learned Ethical Hacking, JavaScript, PHP, PHP Applications, Product Innovation, Product Life Cycle Management, Product Management, Product Marketing, Retail Banking, Security Management, Agent Management Systems, Card Management Solution, and Server Administration.

Employment record and career achievements

From January 2003 to January 2004, Olugbenga Agboola worked as an Application Developer for British Telecom Professional Services.

Between 2004 and January 2005, he worked as an application engineer at Paypal. From there, he became a member of the Enterprise Infrastructure Solution Development team of Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB). This was between January 2005 to March 2009.

Olugbenga Agboola has also worked for Standard Bank Nigeria. His job position at this bank was Technology Product Manager and Developer. Gbenga later developed a Biometric Payment Solution for this bank.

Olugbenga Agboola has also worked as a Product Manager for Google Wallet and Head of Mobile Financial Services at Sterling Bank. From November 2014 to May 2016, he was the Head of Digital Factory and Innovation at Access Bank.

In 2015, Gbenga participated in a Management Programme at the Wharton School. He also co-founded Flutterwave in 2016.

In that same 2016, he was the Senior Entrepreneur in Residence for Africa Fintech Foundry. This went on from May 2016 to August 2018. In 2017, Gbenga was one of the members of a Strategic Marketing Programme at Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management, Evanston, Illinois. 

On October 15, 2018, Olugbenga Agboola became the Chief Executive Officer of Flutterwave, after the former CEO stepped down. At that time, he was also an entrepreneur at the Royal Bank of Scotland Business.

Olugbenga Agboola and Flutterwave

Flutterwave is a company that provides financial technology services to individuals and businesses. It is one of the top 5 Fintech unicorns in Africa, having a company value of over 1 billion USD. Flutterwave was established in 2016. 

The founders were two Nigerians; Iyinoluwa Aboyeji and Olugbenga Agboola. The company headquarters is located in San Francisco, California, in the United States, but it operates in Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, and other African countries.

Iyinoluwa Aboyeji first had the idea of establishing Flutterwave when he had some challenges while transferring money to Africa. Inioluwa Aboyeji is also a co-founder of Andela.

Inioluwa Aboyeji stepped down as the CEO in 2018, to focus on giving back to the startup community. It was as a result of this action that Olugbenga Agboola became the new CEO.

From 2018 till date, Gbenga has moved Flutterwave forward and massively contributed to its growth. After all, what is worth doing at all is worth doing well.

National award

On the 11th of October 2022, Olugbenga Agboola was decorated with a Nigerian national award. He was made an Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) by President Muhammadu Buhari.
